Richard,

Me again! Saw a letter from a blind person in PCPro's March 08 edition saying he would have trouble using the kitten CAPTCHA.

I thought I'd survey people, including via some UK disabled/blind charities to see what they preferred, and if there was any feedback or suggestions. If I create a survey page, would you promote it to US organizations who might be interested? Also if you make sure any language I use is OK over there (disability rights people can be touchy).

Happy to publish the results (raw and analysed) and make sure you get a copy.

Thought it might make a useful addition to the take-up or improvement of this CAPTCHA. If you can recommend a downloadable text CAPTCHA (preferably with audio support) to compare it with, I'll get right on it.

Regards,

John Borda

I'll be glad to support this, but the whole issue with kittenAuth is to provide no semantic information usable by script kiddies and crackers, so that eliminates everything that might be useful in terms of things like alt tags, etc. If you put "kitten" (or whale, or whatever) into the pages displayed by the browser, you loose the semantic invisibility of the images.

Having said that, one could optionally play sound files when the mouse either clicks an image or hovers over an image (I think there is a javascript "onHover" action, I'll have to check). This might not be transparent on some browsers, I don't know, I haven't played with playing sound files through browsers at all so I would have to experiment.

Best,

Dick Munroe

Thomas Boutell has written a PHP captcha script with a "listen to this" link for the partially sighted. There is no symantic info to see on the page.

You can find it here:

and test it here:

Enjoy!
